How to apply self-adhesive locks and latches
Posted 10th July 2024
Many of our locks and latches are self-adhesive and super handy, meaning you can simply apply the sticky pads to the product (if not already in place), peel off the backing and they're ready to use when and where you need them.
However, there are steps you should take to make sure they stick more securely and for longer. If applied properly, they should last until you're ready to take them off!
Follow these simple but effective steps for success with our self-adhesive products to keep them securely in place:
Prepare the area. This first step is really important. Cleaning products and polishes that leave a waxy or shiny finish can prevent the sticky pads from adhering to the surface properly, which can result in them coming loose or not sticking at all. Similarly, residues from cosmetics, lotions and other products can prevent 'stick'. So before you apply the sticky pads to the surface, thoroughly clean and degrease the area you are fitting it to with some alcohol rub or hand gel on a cotton wool pad or clean cloth and thoroughly dry with kitchen towel or a clean cloth. Only apply the pads when the surface is completely dry.
Wait 24 hours before putting pressure or strain on the device. The sticky pads need time for the adhesive to fully set and the bond to strengthen, therefore using the lock or latch too soon after application will weaken the bond and it could come loose. Wait the full 24 hours after applying, before you operate the latch or pull on it.
When ready to remove, apply some gentle heat. Using the low setting on a hair dryer can help to loosen the bond of the adhesive. Wiggle and gently lift the device and it should eventually come loose. If any residue or sticky pad remains on the furniture or surface, this can be removed using rubbing alcohol or hand gel on a clean cloth, or for more stubborn sticky patches, white spirit. WARNING: Take care using flammable and toxic solvents such as white spirit - ventilate the room well and keep out of reach of children and away from naked flames. WARNING: Ensure that any cleaning substance used is suitable for the surface finish of your furniture and won't cause damage.
